Road Cycling Holidays in the Dordogne
Guests can join in a club cycle ride like a local
I (Bob) am a member of the local road cycling club (Le Club de la Tour in Piegut Pluviers), which is a very friendly group of French cyclists, meeting twice a week in the village. Guests are more than welcome to join in with me on a regular club run, which starts at 8.30am during the Summer period on a Thursday and Sunday.
Rides are typically around 70 – 80 kilometers, however unlike club rides in the UK, there is no stop for coffee and cake (it seems to be a bit of a French thing!). An 80-kilometer cycle ride would usually take between 3 – 4 hours depending on the route, and can include 700 – 1200 meters of hill climbing. It is surprising how hilly the Dordogne region is around La Grange Étable.

For holiday guests who need cycle routes that are more challenging, we can arrange a guide who will take groups of 4/5 guests out for 70 – 80 kilometer runs, for €120 per group per session – smaller groups by arrangement. He will tailor the rides to suit the style and level of each group (speed, stops, climbing etc), and also provides valuable mechanical back-up and repairs during the trip.
The region offers cycling routes for all rider levels
There are some spectacular cycling routes in the Dordogne area – the main roads are in good condition with very little traffic, and once you get off these, the roads are virtually traffic free! We are located in the 1800 square kilometer ‘Parc Naturel Regional Perigord Limousin’ which along with the quiet roads, offers beautiful and natural scenery at every head turn.
One of the many cycling routes in the area follows ‘La route de Richard Coeur de Lion’ which passes through shady woodland, (welcome during the summer sun), past some of the many spectacular chateaux around the Dordogne region that Richard 1st either stayed at or laid siege to during his reign. It also passes by the Chateau de Chalus Chabrol where he was eventually killed in 1199.
To the West and into the Charente region, the geography changes into more open, rolling farmland – again with spectacular scenery. A cycle ride to yet another spectacular chateau at La Rochefoucauld takes you past some of the local vinyards which offer a tasty rest bite to refresh and refuel before turning back for La Grange Étable.
Relax & recover after a ride out around our pool
After a good cycle ride out, guests can relax around our pool, which is always open during the summer months – personally, I have to say it is also very welcoming after a long day in the saddle! The pool also offers a great option to keep any of the group entertained if they wish to miss a day while the others are out riding.
The Dordogne area and especially the local region around our gites is great for all levels of cyclist. We will accommodate all levels and capabilities to ensure you have a rewarding and enjoyable stay with us at La Grange Etable.
